Here’s the next interview with the contributors to my new book An Illustrated Journey: Inspiration From the Private Art Journals of Traveling Artists, Illustrators and Designers
Liz Steel is a lovely, bubbly person who has fallen madly in love with drawing over the past few years. In our chat, she shares the story of her journey from office-bound architect to world traveler and rabid journalista. (See more of her work in the book and on her blog).
Liz shares a lot more in my book. Here’s an excerpt:
“I was born in Sydney and have lived here all my life and LOVE it! I have always loved to draw but at high school, maths was my favorite subject (a family trait) and I dropped out of art after one year because I spent 6 months drawing a spark plug! Although I entered my degree in architecture from a more technical basis, my love of drawing was soon re-kindled and it was during my student years that I started keeping travel journals. These early journal were mainly made up of little …” (continued)
Fantastic film, Danny and Liz! Looking forward to more like this!

Oh man! I’m half way through and am LOVING this! It’s so fun to see Liz after years of reading her blog. And her comments about how we’re so unnecessarily critical of our our drawings hit home, too … and her kit! (now, back to the video!)

Been following Liz on Flickr for over a year now and this makes me feel that she is an actual acquaintance. I watched the shift in her style while she was in Singapore, and love seeing her development as an artist. Thanks so much for this super interview! Good luck to Liz on her newest adventures and journey. And Amazon tells me that your book is on the way! I can hardly wait!

Liz is incredible and a great inspiration. One note: about 1/3 through, her sound/volume went way down & I could not hear a lot of it. The sound from your side was perfect. Hope you can fix this as I’d love to hear the whole piece. Great idea these interviews!! Great!!! Thank you.

Thanks for the heads up, Linda. It’s true that the sound dips at 17:00 for about 30 seconds but then it comes back up soon thereafter, As they used to say, ‘please adjust your set’. Unfortunately, Liz was far away in Sydney when we spoke and my technical abilities are fairly limited. In the end, I decided to focus on quantity rather than production quality so I could get as many great conversations recorded as possible. WHen I am a regular on GDN (the Global Drawing Network), we’ll have a better crew!

Danny, great talk with you and Liz. I love her sketches and it is great fun to see the giant sketchbooks she used in Thailand—the physical sketchbook scaled in her hands—to see how she was experimenting.
