Instead of hitting the POST button at 7 am as per usual, I sat down to draw my breakfast.
This particular slice comes from a loaf baked by our pal, Michael. He brought it to a wine tasting we hosted last weekend and it was so delicious I managed to stretch the loaf out all week. Today I hit the heel.
Drawing toast is an adventure. It’s an opportunity to slow way down and delve deep. I begin by slowly driving my pen around the perimeter and then, quadrant by quadrant, I work my way through every nook, crumb, divot, pit and hole. It’s not difficult work but it’s absorbing and clears the mind.
I have gone into this in more depth here on the blog, in Art Before Breakfast and in Seeing at SBS but all you really need is a pen, a piece of paper, some toast, and about 10 spare minutes.
Every Friday I work through an idea from my latest book, Art Before Breakfast. It would be lovely if I could imagine you out there drawing along with me. This particular exercise comes from p.38. If you decide to do it too, please share how it turned out! (Share the results on your own blog or on Facebook and post a link in my comments section. Use #artb4bkfst on Twitter or FB).
And if you’d like to draw the same bread I did, here’s Michael’s recipe:
Arrgh! I can’t see the forest for the trees or the toast for the crumbs. Could you slow down the rate at which the images appear? Otherwise, I love the idea of sharing our breakfasts and sketches on Friday.

Yes… you can think of me drawing/doodling/painting/creating on Friday along with you. Now however I have to go toss a slice of bread in the toaster.

Great idea. One last piece of awesome Prairie bread from Whole Foods. Guess I will be drawing it before I eat it!! Thanks!!

I don’t understand how much of each ingredient to use??? Maybe I’ll just get some bread at the store and draw that, but you can imagine me drawing… and when I have a link I’ll come back here to add it for you.

The GIF animation is great to bring life to your drawing. In fact, I love how you put the focus on drawing as a process and not *only* as a result. I’ve read the Creative License and since then, I enjoy drawing much more. It’s my zen exercise! Also I love seeing and feeling how much more intimate an artist gets with their subject when they get to draw in such detail, even if it’s just a piece of bread 🙂

Danny I was looking for another sin and got toast… I think it was a better deal for now. Four sins to go I think.

I’ve been drawing toasts since your klass in Seeing. Wonderful “rescuing” tool when I get lost in art, and/or life. I like your project idea very much, count me in.

Oh no! Not the toast exercise! Have you any idea how excruciatingly hard this one is for someone with ADHD? :-O And “10 minutes”? I’d need a day at least, and even then I’d have to be tied to my chair, in a darkened room (oh no, wait a minute, that wouldn’t work…), with no windows, and absolute silence… I did try for Seeing, I really did, almost a year ago, but it was like being v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y Tortured!
I do have a story about that but I’m waiting for the one year anniversary to share it, at which point I promise I will ‘suck it up’ and have another go. 😉

I really enjoyed the “gif” element of the drawing, it’s a cool way to share the process and the result. I have been inspired to go try one myself!

this was one of my favorite lessons in the “seeing” classes. It’s so easy to get caught up in the moment with just a piece of toast!

I’m happy you chose Friday for the Danny Gregory Creative Exercise Day because that is my day off. I certainly will be drawing with you although I am trying to figure out how to scan and upload art since I’ve changed computers. Wanted to let you know that I drew a motor bike yesterday. Would never have chosen that subject before SBS. I rather like how it turned out and am passing up drawing toast today but will be outside drawing bikes. Maybe toast tomorrow…besides no one can draw toast like you. Cheers-Darlene
