I’m the best!

Maybe I’m not the best writer.

Maybe I’m not the best artist.

Maybe I’m not the best thinker.

But I am supremely qualified to do at least one thing. Here’s my superpower:

I’m the best person to write what I think.

I’m the best person to draw the world through my eyes.

I’m the best person to express my point of view, my experiences, my mistakes, my shortcomings, my strengths.

When I compare myself with others and what they make, when I think, ‘Oh, I could never do that!’, it’s easy to forget my superpower.

And if I do, I won’t express myself — and no one else will.

And even if they were to try, they couldn’t to do it as well as I could. So, it’s up to me.

Learn from others, but don’t wish to be them. We all have unique ways of seeing the world. And we all have our own, priceless way to express what we are.

Have you used your superpower yet?

  1. Danny – truly inspirational. You have another super power – the ability to inspire us to ALWAYS fight the monkey. Thanks Danny this is one of your best!

  2. Oh my gosh! Thank you! These words today touched my heart. I am one of those people who wish I was as talented as a whole bunch of other people. You make me feel good, that I am the best at who ‘I’ am—and that doesn’t mean I have to be perfect. I have tears in my eyes as I write this. You truly are inspirational and sometimes you just reach out and touch me with your words. God bless.

  3. You have the gift of inspiring and engaging others Danny – I love reading your writing. Your post reminded me of Kenneth Atchity’s time management advice for writers: “Only do what only you can do.” My monkey has absolutely no idea what to do with this phrase (bonus!), but my donkey just puts her head down and keeps moving forward.

  4. Instead of trying to be someone else (impossible and a waste of time) today I will endeavor to be the best me I can be. Thanks, Danny! As you refocus you help me refocus.

And by the way I really really like the way you are drawing the world through your eyes. You’re a great inspiration 😉 Thank you.

  6. Oh I’m forever losing, misplacing, ripping or destroying my darn cape. Grrrrrrrr. I love this post, I do, but man, it’s hard.

I so much want to spread a bit of beauty but get so hung about doing so I think I only succeed in spreading angst. Grrrrrr.

On another note entirely: today I discovered gouache. Oh my gosh (or should that be: Oh my gouache? 😂Sorry about that)! I LOVE it!

  8. Thanks Danny! Too often I second guess what I write, wondering if anyone will care. But it’s my perspective, my story. And I need to be confident in that. So thanks again for that burst of super power! 😉

  9. Danny your post today reminds me of the best thing I heard during my time with SBS. Koosje Koene said “The drawing you make is so much better than the drawing they’re not making at all.” I invoke the wisdom of Koosje when I want to silence any and all critics. Super? Yes. Powerful? Yes Yes Thanks!

  10. This is a great post, Danny! 🙂 – I’m always feeling much better, when I continue to draw. No single person on earth could draw “my” stuff better than myself! These drawings are not “perfect”, but POWERFUL because they are MINE and that’s FINE!!! 🙂

  11. So, this morning I was backpacking in the High Sierras of California in a cold, misty rain with 35 lbs of “necessities” on my back. I got to thinking about who I am as I was walking along the trail. I realized, as I was passing others along the trail and also being passed by others along that trail, that there will always be someone stronger that me, and someone weaker. There will always be someone thinner than me and someone heavier than me, there will always be someone more of what I want to be and someone less than I want to be. But there there will never, ever be someone else who can take the place of who I am in this world. That is my super power. Just to be simply ME. At 9,000 feet elevation I discovered my power. PS My sketchbook and travel paints were along on the journey!
